September is literacy month in the Cayman Islands and, to celebrate, here are few easy ways to get more reading done – this month and beyond.
Set a Goal
Challenge yourself to read a certain number of books per year. Remember to be realistic. Challenge yourself to one book per month, six books per year or to read 20 pages at the start of your day.
Keep a List
Use a website such as Goodreads to keep track of books you’ve read or want to read. You can also set your book reading goal to keep you on track.
Carry your Book Everywhere
You never know when you will get the chance to read. Carry your book with you and get a few pages in at lunch or while waiting at an appointment.
Schedule Reading time
Set a time for you to read every day or week. Fifteen minutes in the morning before you start getting ready for work, at lunch or before bedtime. Scheduling time to read can help make reading a part of your routine.
Giving Up Isn’t Always Bad
Do you ever find yourself reading a book that your friend recommended but you just can’t get into it? Give yourself permission to give up on that book. Unless the book is a mandatory read, giving it up is okay.
Listen to Your Books
Spend an hour in traffic each way on your commute? Listen to an audio book while in the car. Can’t choose between gym time and book time? Listen to your book while doing your cardio.
Join a Book Club
Join or start a book club and make reading a social affair. Knowing you’ll meet to talk about the book could also incentivize you to read more chapters.
Don’t let the cost of new books deter you from your goals; borrow from a friend, start a book exchange at work, buy books from the Book Loft at the Humane Society or head to your local library. Who doesn’t like a good deal?
Aside from boosting your knowledge, fueling your wanderlust and fulfilling your desire to know “who done it”, reading can help you relax, ease depression and studies have suggested that reading more can prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
